Worth knowing about Gothenburg
- Landvetter has no rail connection: a high-speed line from Gothenburg Central was agreed only in 2024 and is expected around 2035, so arrivals are by coach or road.
- The airport coach reaches Korsvagen in about 20 minutes but the Nils Ericson Terminal next to Gothenburg Central in about 30, so the nearer stop is not the central one.
- Gothenburg has an open wireless network called goteborgfree at several places in the city, and it needs no login. City libraries run a separate network, Biblioteket, which needs a library card and login details.
- Vasttrafik lets you tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard, or Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay, on buses, trams and boats in zone A. The ticket costs 38 SEK and lasts 90 minutes.
- Tap payment works only in zone A, which covers Gothenburg, Molndal, Partille and Ockero. You cannot tap on Vastagen regional trains, although a tapped passenger may change to a train inside the 90 minutes.
- Tapping gives one ticket per payment card, so a group travelling together needs a separate payment card for each person.
- You cannot buy a ticket from the driver on buses in Gothenburg, Molndal, Partille or on X lines. Elsewhere in the region drivers and train crew sell tickets, but only by bank card. Cash is not accepted.
- The Vasttrafik To Go app needs no registration to buy a ticket. It takes a credit card or Swish, and a purchase may have to be confirmed with BankID or 3D Secure. Buying needs an internet connection.
- Vasttrafik offers free wifi at every large travel centre in the region. Most travel centres also have ticket sales, a waiting hall, toilets and a kiosk.
- Sweden no longer allows anonymous prepaid SIMs. The provider must register the subscriber and check identity with a valid identity document or reliable electronic identification. The card cannot be used until it is registered and activated.
- Vasttrafik 24 hour and 72 hour tickets give unlimited travel on trains, buses, trams and ferries inside the zones printed on the ticket, with Marstrandsfarjan excluded. Zone options run from A alone up to ABC.
- On Vasttrafik buses you board through the front door and show your ticket to the driver. On trams and on Gothenburg bus lines 17 to 19, 21 and 25 you may board through any door.
- Vastlanken, being built under central Gothenburg, is an eight kilometre double track railway including a six kilometre tunnel, four kilometres through rock and two through soil, with underground stations at Centralen, Haga and Korsvagen.
- Stena Line runs two ferry routes out of Gothenburg. Frederikshavn in Denmark takes about three hours fifteen minutes with up to six sailings a day. Kiel in Germany is an overnight crossing of about fourteen hours.
