Does my phone support eSIM?

Type your model and get the answer in the first line, with the profile limits and the one thing that trips people up on that exact handset.

Almost certainly yes if the phone was made after 2018. Nearly every model catalogued here supports eSIM. The exceptions are regional variants and a few older Huawei handsets, and the checker names them rather than leaving you to find out at the airport.

What an eSIM actually is

An eSIM is a chip soldered to the board that does the job the plastic card used to do. The card carried a profile, which is a small file identifying you to a network.

The soldered chip holds several of those files at once and lets you switch between them in software. The hardware has been in phones since 2018. What changed recently is that carriers stopped blocking it.

The practical consequence is the one people care about. Your home line stays exactly where it is, keeps your number, and keeps receiving calls and texts. A second line carrying cheap data sits next to it.

You choose which line carries data and which line carries calls, and you can change your mind at any point without opening the phone.

Stored profiles against active profiles

These are two different numbers, and the difference causes most of the failed installs we see. A recent iPhone stores 8 profiles and runs 2 at once. A typical Android stores 5 and runs 2.

Storing means the profile lives on the chip. Running means it is registered to a network right now and can carry traffic.

The failure mode is quiet. You install a travel eSIM in Japan, another in Thailand, another in Portugal, never delete any of them, and on the fourth trip the install fails. The chip is full.

Delete the finished profiles from Settings and the install works immediately. This is also why the Orbislo Passport installs once and never again. One profile, every country, no slot pressure.

The three reasons a compatible phone still refuses

There is a fourth case worth naming, because it is not a failure at all. Some phones bury the option. On several Android skins the eSIM entry sits inside SIM manager rather than at the top of the network menu.

On a few it only appears after you tap an existing SIM. The checker prints the exact path for the operating system your model runs.

  1. Carrier lock. A handset still under contract, or bought on an operator instalment plan, will refuse a foreign profile even though the hardware is fine. Ask your carrier to unlock it. In the United States that is usually free once the device is paid off.
  2. Regional variant. Several United States Galaxy S21 units shipped with eSIM disabled. Xiaomi phones sold on the Chinese domestic market have no eSIM at all, even where the global version of the same model does.
  3. Old operating system. eSIM needs iOS 12.1 or later, or Android 10 or later on most handsets. A phone that has not been updated in five years may have the hardware and not the menu.

Check it yourself in ten seconds

Do not take our word for it. Open the keypad and dial star hash zero six hash. The phone shows its identifiers. If an EID appears alongside the IMEI, there is an eSIM in that handset.

No EID means no eSIM, whatever any list on the internet says. On an iPhone the same number sits in Settings, General, About. On Android it is usually in Settings, About phone, Status.

Once you have confirmed it, the rest is quick. Provisioning failure is refunded automatically inside 60 seconds, so an install that does not work costs you nothing.

Where we loseIf your phone has no EID, nothing on this site will help you. Buy a physical SIM at the destination airport, or borrow a hotspot. We would rather say that than sell you a plan that cannot install.

Questions people ask

Which iPhones support eSIM?
Every iPhone from the XR and XS in 2018 onward. The XR and XS store 5 profiles. From the iPhone 12 onward they store 8 and run 2 at once. United States models of the iPhone 14 and later have no SIM tray at all, so eSIM is the only option on those handsets. The iPhone Air has no tray in any market.
Which Android phones support eSIM?
Pixel 4 and later, Galaxy S20 and later along with the Z Fold and Z Flip lines, Xiaomi 13 and later on global firmware, OnePlus 11 and later, and recent Motorola Razr and Edge models. Android phones typically store 5 profiles and run 2 at once. The exceptions are regional, not generational.
My phone is on the list but the eSIM option is missing. Why?
Three causes, in order of likelihood. It is carrier locked, and a locked handset refuses foreign profiles. It is a regional variant that shipped without the feature, which happened on several United States Galaxy S21 units and on Chinese domestic Xiaomi models. Or it is a Pixel 4 sold through an operator that disabled eSIM in firmware.
Does storing 8 profiles mean I can use 8 plans at once?
No. Storing and running are different numbers, and the tool prints both. An iPhone 15 stores 8 profiles and runs 2 at once, which means your home line plus one travel line. Old profiles still occupy a slot, so delete the ones you have finished with if an install is refused.
How do I check without trusting a list?
Dial star hash zero six hash on the keypad. If an EID appears under the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM. On iOS you can also open Settings, General, About and look for an EID row. That is the device telling you directly rather than a website guessing from a model name.
Will an eSIM replace my normal SIM?
No. It installs alongside it. Keep your home line switched on for calls and bank codes, turn data roaming off on that line, and set mobile data to the travel line. That combination gives you your own number and cheap data at the same time.
