Worth knowing about Utrecht
- Utrecht has no airport of its own; arrivals come through Schiphol and continue by direct NS intercity to Utrecht Centraal.
- Utrecht Centraal is the largest and busiest railway station in the Netherlands, and its bus station is the largest too.
- Utrecht runs light-rail sneltram lines rather than a metro, with the Uithof line 22 opening only in December 2019.
- Utrecht trams, buses and trains all use OVpay. You hold a contactless debit card, credit card, phone or smartwatch against the reader to check in and out, with nothing to register or activate beforehand.
- NS accepts foreign contactless Maestro, V PAY, Mastercard and Visa cards for OVpay. A few foreign cards are excluded, including Vivid, Paysafe and the Revolut digital debit card.
- You must check in at the start of a Dutch journey and check out at the end, using the same card or device both times. Mixing cards or phones between the two taps produces a wrong fare.
- U-OV, which runs Utrecht city buses and trams, takes OVpay on board, so the same bank card works on a tram to the Uithof and on the intercity from Schiphol.
- Almost all NS Intercity trains carry free wifi. Open the wifi list on your phone or laptop and select the network called Wi-Fi on the train. Trains with it show a wifi logo on the outside.
- Utrecht Centraal is served from Schiphol by several direct NS Intercity lines, 1400, 3100, 3200 and 3500, plus Sprinter 5700, so a missed train is rarely a long wait.
- Utrecht Centraal has 8 platforms and 16 tracks and handled 241,730 daily rail passengers excluding transfers in 2025.
- The Stationsplein bicycle parking at Utrecht Centraal holds 12,500 bikes and is the largest in the world. The first 24 hours are free, and digital signs guide riders to empty spaces.
- Renting an NS OV-fiets needs a personal OV-chipkaart carrying the free OV-fiets season ticket or an NS Flex season ticket. A plain contactless bank card will not unlock one.
- Utrecht switched off its free city centre wifi network on 1 July 2019 when the contract ran out. Municipal free wifi remains only in buildings such as the city office, town hall and libraries.
- The Dom Tower is 112 metres tall. Its restoration ran from late 2019 and was finished in the summer of 2024, several months ahead of the planned November 2024 date.
