Worth knowing about Tulum
- Tulum only got its own airport in December 2023; before that arrivals came through Cancun, about two hours up the coast.
- Tulum's airport is roughly 20 km southwest of the town itself, so landing there still means a road or rail transfer.
- Both Tulum and Cancun airports have their own Tren Maya stations, so the two can be linked by rail rather than only by highway.
- A foreign visitor who buys a Mexican SIM must have it registered, using a passport or a temporary CURP for foreigners, under rules the regulator applied from January 2026.
- The Mexican registration rules cover eSIM as well as plastic SIM, but leave lines roaming in from foreign operators aside until the regulator sets out arrangements after the 2026 World Cup.
- There is no single national counter for registering a Mexican line. The regulator's portal points you at each carrier's own platform, and an unregistered line drops to emergency numbers only.
- The published Tren Maya timetable shows one train each way per day between Estacion Cancun and the Tulum Aeropuerto station, taking 2 hours 4 minutes.
- Tulum has two Tren Maya stations, one in the town and one beside the airport, and both opened on 20 September 2024.
- Cancun International, the region's main gateway, is about 125 km north of Tulum, so arriving there means a long onward transfer by road or rail.
- The road link is Federal Highway 307, which runs 361 km through Quintana Roo from Cancun in the north to near Chetumal in the south, passing Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
- Tulum's coastal strip sits inside the Parque del Jaguar, a federal project of more than 1,000 hectares beside Highway 307 with a 22 km perimeter, lit bike paths and controlled beach accesses.
- The park was built with a Tren Maya connection and an electric bus station, so reaching the beach and ruins is routed through park infrastructure rather than open road.
- The Tulum archaeological zone is the third most visited pre-Hispanic site in Mexico and takes more than 3,000 visitors a day, inside a biocultural area of 2,913 hectares.
- Tulum airport opened on 1 December 2023 as a dual use civil and military field run by Grupo Olmeca-Maya-Mexica, and handled 1,248,645 passengers in 2025.
- Tren Maya tickets can be bought on the website, the iOS and Android app, by WhatsApp or phone, at station ticket windows and from vending machines.
- The railway reaching Tulum is section 5, 111 km of double track electrified line from the Cancun Airport station, with intermediate passenger stations at Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen.
