Worth knowing about Venice
- Venice's historic centre has no metro or overground rail: an underground railway is impracticable and there is no space for surface trains, so the canals carry the rapid transit and the vaporetto water bus is the public transport network.
- Marco Polo Airport is not connected to Venice by rail; you reach the historic centre either by Alilaguna water bus across the lagoon or by bus to Piazzale Roma, the mainland road terminus.
- A rail link connecting Marco Polo Airport to Venezia Mestre via the Venice-Trieste railway is under construction and expected to be completed in late 2026.
- Many low-cost flights labelled 'Venice' land at Treviso, about 31 km away, from where the coach to Venice takes roughly 40 minutes.
