Getting into Athens

Underground and on the metro
Athens Metro runs 3 lines. It opened in 1869. The operator does not publish whether the tunnels carry a mobile signal, so we do not claim either way.
Worth knowing about Athens
- Line 3 reaches the airport on a surface section shared with the suburban railway, running along the median of the A6 and A64 motorways, so the last stretch is not in tunnel.
- The airport has its own fare. OASA charges 9.00 euro one way by metro and 5.50 euro on the airport express buses, against 1.20 euro for an ordinary 90 minute ticket.
- All four airport express bus lines, X93, X95, X96 and X97, run 24 hours a day.
- Line 1 opened on 27 February 1869 as a single track steam railway and was electrified in 1904. Lines 2 and 3 opened on 28 January 2000, and a Line 4 has been under construction since August 2021.
- Syntagma, the busiest station on the network, holds an archaeological exhibition of finds dug up while the station was built.
