Getting into Hamburg
- S-Bahn S1 from the underground station beneath Airport Plaza to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (HAM), about 25 minutes. Runs through tunnels, where a signal drops
Underground and on the metro
Hamburg U-Bahn runs 4 lines. It opened in 1912. The operator states mobile coverage in parts of the network only.
Worth knowing about Hamburg
- Hochbahn says there is still no adequate LTE network in its U-Bahn tunnels, which is why its trains carry no onboard wifi even though stations are connected by fibre.
- The S1 divides at Ohlsdorf. Only the front three carriages continue to the airport, the rear section goes to Poppenbuttel instead.
- The airport S-Bahn station is underground, reached directly from Terminals 1 and 2 by lift or escalator, and only opened on 11 December 2008.
- Hamburg Airport opened in January 1911 and is the oldest international airport in the world still in operation. It was renamed after Helmut Schmidt in November 2016.
- The S1 runs every 10 minutes between about 6am and 11pm and takes 25 minutes each way to the Hauptbahnhof.
